How the water valve works:
The water valve directs coolant to the radiator or back to the engine and can mix both together in different amounts. The water valve never changes the flow rate it just directs where it goes. The valve is designed to handle the same amount of flow that the water pump would produce if the valve were not in the system. The valve has four 8 o-ring inlet ports for water that is coming out of the engine. (You can get 8 o-ring fittings in 4, -6, -8 for the outlets you have on your engine). There are two 10 o-ring ports outlet ports on the front that returns water to the radiator, and one 16 AN male port that is connected to the water pump housing with a hose. Inside the valve is a piston that is moved by the driver via a cable that controls where and how much water flows back to the engine or the radiator.
We have tested this valve at the Winter Nationals in Florida on the Josh Wells 6W 410-sprint car. The valve worked flawlessly with no problems. We raced two nights without it and never could build enough heat even with tape and cardboard covering the entire radiator. The temperature at night was in the 40s. On the third night we installed the water valve and positioned it in middle of its adjustment range with nothing in front of the radiator. We ran it in the middle position the whole night and the engine stayed at a constant 180 degrees. The second night, we moved the valve to Ύ closed on the radiator and the temperature increased to a constant 210 degrees with nothing covering the radiator.The valve also works great for time trials because of the wait in the infield the engine would lose a lot of heat. We ran the water valve set to completely bypass the radiator and recycle all of the water back into the engine and we could build heat up from 130 degrees to 200 degrees by the second lap of the time trail. This water valve helped us run the rest of The Winter Nationals without problems. The driver never had to adjust the valve while racing. On the first two nights that we did not run the water valve the engine was too cold and puffed smoke out the pipes and the oil tank on restarts. When we ran the water valve, we never saw a puff of smoke the rest of the week.
Why should you run a water valve? First you dont need to worry about getting under the hood all the time to block the radiator off. You do not have to worry about putting too much tape or too little tape in front of the radiator. If your engine is getting hot, the driver has a chance to save it and stay in the race. You always have an open radiator that is flowing air through the engine compartment helping the engine breathe, and more air over the oil tank eliminating oil over heating and low oil pressure problems. Racing is about going faster so why have a blocked off radiator acting like a big flat wall pushing through the air causing drag?
